HIV 101
HIV is serious because it
comprises the immune system
and there is no cure or
vaccine.
• HIV is a virus that is
able to invade the T-cell
which regulates the immune
system in our bodies. As
greater numbers of HIV
infect the body, the
individual goes through the
stages of the disease.
• There are different stages
of HIV infection, including
HIV+ asymptomatic, HIV+
symptomatic and
AIDS-defining illnesses.
•You can't tell by looking
at someone whether they have
HIV or AIDS. They may not
even know themselves, which
makes it even more important
to play safe.
•When infected by HIV, the
body begins to manufacture
antibodies to fight the
disease. There is a period
of time during which the
virus exists in few numbers
and may not be identified by
an HIV Antibody Test. The
period during which the
amount of virus is too small
to be detected by the test
is called the "window
period." it can last from
4-12 weeks after infection
with the virus. |
